MI5 warning a chilling reality check - Allister

17 September 2010

TUV Leader Jim Allister, in responding to the warning by the Head of MI5 of increased republican terrorism, said it was a ‘chilling reality check’ in face of the political deception that pandering to terrorism would keep us safe.

In a statement Mr Allister said:-

“The warning from the head of MI5 of the rising threat from republican terrorism is a chilling reality check which explodes the ‘peace process’ myth that pandering to terrorism keeps you safe. Our terrorist-inclusive government at Stormont and the cross-border bodies, are the product of such a mentality, for that was the strategy of the Belfast Agreement. Now, we find a fresh generation of Provo-trained terrorists, under a new umbrella of convenience, following the Provo template in their drive for political advancement.

“Some of us warned this would happen, but all the while government and security services were dropping their guard and doing so as part of the orchestrated response to keep Sinn Fein on board. Hence, the destruction of Special Branch, the decimation of police numbers, the high profile removal of security watch towers and defences and whatever it took to maintain an aura of normality. Meanwhile, republicanism was biding its time and now that our defences are down they are again upping the anti.

“When the head of MI5, Jonathan Evans, has to admit they called it wrong -itself a confidence sapping admission - and warns of a severely heightened terrorist threat, then even the most optimistic should wake up and learn that terrorism can never be bought off by concessions. Sadly, from the Secretary of State’s equivocation over contacts with ‘dissidents’ it seems nothing has in fact been learned.

“As for IRA/Sinn Fein, they could undoubtedly crush the present campaign because they know the identity of every terrorist they ever trained and they know who detached from them, so they know the current terror brigade. But, because the threat and muscle of some arms length and deniable terror aids the Sinn Fein strategy and the need to keep ‘moving the process forward’, but never arriving, they talk the talk but never walk the walk of defeating terrorism. Keeping the pot boiling is an intrinsic part of Sinn Fein’s strategy for a united Ireland.”
