Peace process built on lies - it's official!

01 September 2010

Reacting to some of the contents of Tony Blair’s memoirs TUV leader Jim Allister said:

“The admission, even boast, by former Prime Minister Tony Blair that he stretched the truth “past breaking point” when it came to the Northern Ireland “peace process” amounts to an admission of what many of us have long said – the “peace process” was built upon a series of lies.

“These memoirs give a glimpse into the deep immorality which lay at the heart of the ‘peace process’ and how some Unionists, who prided themselves on their prowess, were conned, even on the very ‘oath of office’ which the DUP Leader held up as the ultimate confirmation of the transformation of IRA/Sinn Fein. Now it turns out Blair lied to Paisley about what Adams had agreed to, resulting in a pledge of office not worth the paper it is written on.

“The question is just how many other deliberate lies were concocted to cajole the process along. Did it include deception on the extent of decommissioning? I suspect so. Were unpublished promises and secret deals with IRA/Sinn Fein part of the mix?

“Blair’s belief that “politicians are obliged from time to time to conceal the full truth, to bend it and even distort it, where the interests of the bigger strategic goal demand it be done” reveals why during the Blair era politics sunk to new lows of disrepute.”
