Time to bring in the police - Allister
18 March 2010
TUV Leader Jim Allister QC has called for a thorough police investigation into whether those responsible for covering up child abuse in the Roman Catholic Church were guilty of any criminal offences.
In a statement Mr Allister said:-
“As the endless revelations continue about how child abuse was covered up within the Roman Catholic Church, the time has come, I believe, for the PSNI to launch a formal investigation into whether any or all of the following criminal offences were committed:
withholding information; assisting offenders; perverting the course of justice; and conspiracy.
“There is, I believe, already enough disturbing information in the public domain to warrant the Chief Constable initiating investigations and, accordingly, I am writing to him requesting such. The public interest requires that every dimension of these issues is pursued and that has to include whether or not criminal offences were committed through collective or individual decisions, or actions designed to prevent matters being reported to the police.
“Neither the status of any individual, or organization, nor the vintage of the possible offending should stand in the way of a thorough-going police investigation.”
