With whom is the DUP 'keeping faith' today?

09 March 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister QC:-

"Today the serial pledge-breaking DUP will crash and burn its latest promise, articulated by Nigel 'not in a political lifetime' Dodds when he decreed UUP support for policing and justice was 'ESSENTIAL' if the DUP was to vote for it.

"Now, instead the DUP - representing, since the last real poll, not NIO fantasy polls, only a minority of Unionists - will partner with IRA/Sinn Fein to deliver the republican objective of policing and justice into their terrorist-inclusive Executive. The entire policing and justice saga has been one of DUP somersaults and climbdowns: from political lifetimes to Gregory Campbell's 6 years, to Lord Morrow's 'not in the lifetime of this Assembly', to Jeffrey Donaldson's pre-condition of retention of the Full-time Reserve, to Nigel Dodds' pre-requisite of UUP support. The road to gifting Sinn Fein their strategic goal is littered with DUP broken promises; but then clambering over the 'dead bodies' of mythical promises is nothing new for DUP NUA.

"I wonder when William McCrea, 21 years ago today, buried three constituents murdered in Coagh by the wicked organisation which he now sustains in power, did he ever think he'd meekly file through the lobbies on another 9th March to gift their killers, IRA/Sinn Fein, their prized demand on policing and justice.

"Across this land there are memorials to so many innocent dead, policemen, soldiers, civilians. Many bear the exhortation, "Keep faith with them". With whom will the DUP keep faith today? Will it be with those who died at the hands of the IRA or will it be with the sordid deal they have now done with the same IRA/Sinn Fein?
