Allister Hopes for French 'Non'

20 May 2005

Speaking today, DUP MEP Jim Allister QC said, “The French Referendum may provide an unexpected early body blow to the EU Constitution. A “No” vote by France, as a founding state and vital part of the Franco-German axis, would be a tremendous setback for the euro-fanatics who are driving this ill-conceived Constitution. It would leave the Constitution mortally wounded.  This would be excellent news for all who believe in preserving national powers and rolling back the centralisation process which lies at the heart of the Constitution.

It is clear that frenetic efforts are now being made by all the forces that Brussels and the French Government can muster to browbeat the French people into voting “Yes”.  I trust they have the resolve to stand firm.  In doing so they will do us all a service.”
