Another sop to IRA/Sinn Fein - DUP in disarray over Irish

15 February 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister

"So, despite all the DUP assurances of Hillsborough delivering nothing for the Irish language, it now emerges that a further £20 million is to be wasted on promoting Irish and its anti-British agenda, as part of yet another sop to Sinn Fein.

Indeed, no later than Saturday Arlene Foster was denying any moves on Irish, yet today, 48 hours later, Nelson McCausland is confirming TUV claims that he committed at Hillsborough to an Irish language strategy by the end of March (did Arlene not read the small print?) and now Adams has trumped them both by announcing a down payment of an extra £20m.

"The DUP boast that through devolution it has stopped delivery on the Irish language is once more exposed as mere fantasy. Is it not the case that the wilting 14 were assured there would be nothing for the Irish language? Once more the DUP has been sold a pup.

"With everything that emerges it is becoming increasingly clear just how bad a deal for Unionism was hatched at Hillsborough: Sinn Fein got their immediate date for policing & justice, a veto through the Executive, a work programme through Section 5 for Irish and north/southery and now a down payment of £20m for the gaelicisation of Ulster."
