Another DUP failure at Hillsborough - no change to 'victim' definition

11 February 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister

“Since it came to power with IRA/Sinn Fein the DUP has been promising to rectify the great wrong done to innocent victims by the obscene definition in the 2006 Victims & Survivors Order. Its equivalence of perpetrator with victim is something Stormont can change and despite before every election promising they have a cunning plan to do so, nothing has happened.

“At Hillsborough they had an opportunity to extract this concession from Sinn Fein, but they failed to do so. Instead, it was all one way traffic in Sinn Fein’s favour. Once more the innocent victims have been let down by the DUP. The magnitude of their failure at Hillsborough is staggering.

“The DUP are trying to spin to their dwindling supporters that Hillsborough deal was a great day for Unionism. Well, let us see how it matches up to the DUP’s own pre-negotiations benchmark by having them publish the famous 8 page letter of demands which they sent to the Prime Minister last autumn. Then all will see how many boxes they got ticked at Hillsborough.

“So, I challenge the DUP to publish that letter. If they don’t it will because of their own embarrassment over now easily they rolled over at Hillsborough.”
