Hillsborough devices are more of the ticking variety - Allister

08 February 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister QC:-

“Peter Robinson’s ‘clever device’ is so clever it seems only Peter is clever enough to understand and explain it! Poor Poots certainly couldn’t explain it, but then he can’t even see delisting as a clever device to erase the Maze.

“I hope Peter’s latest wheeze is better than his last clever device – agreeing to change the law to permit a Sinn Fein First Minister, because he thought that would be a very clever way of coercing people to vote DUP.

“Peter’s clever devices have a habit of blowing up in his face.

“But I suppose having just sold his party a pup, he had to hoodwink the blushing 14 with something. Inverse proportionality in gullibility helps.

“The Sinn Fein/DUP Hillsborough deal is full of devices, but mostly of the ticking variety. Certainly, embedded promises on the Irish language, north/southery and a Single Equality Bill will tick away till Sinn Fein needs their detonation to propel them to their next staging post.

“Meanwhile, Sinn Fein will pocket their win on policing and justice and string the hapless DUP along on parading – giving a whole new meaning to the DUP’s one time association with ‘never, never’. This is what happens when you negotiate under duress: you get a duff deal.”
