Unionist MEPs condemn Sinn Fein Brussels event

06 December 2004

Unionist MEPs Jim Allister and Jim Nicholson have condemned Bairbre de Brun for her efforts to spread anti-unionist propaganda in the European Parliament.  Ms de Brun has invited MEPs to a meeting in Brussels tomorrow (7th December) on “state killings in Ireland” at which they will be briefed on the activities of “unionist paramilitaries”.

Mr Nicholson commented, “We always had a policy of the 3 Northern Ireland MEPs working together for the good of all our people.  Through co-operation, Ian Paisley, John Hume and I were able to achieve much for Northern Ireland.  Crucial to that was the understanding that we did not use the Parliament as a venue for airing our own local grievances.  MEPs from other countries respected us for that.  Rather than try to achieve for Northern Ireland, Ms de Brun has chosen to open up a Brussels branch of the Sinn Fein grievance factory”.

Mr Allister stated, “Since Ms de Brun issued her invitation last week, the reaction from many MEPs has been one of disgust at this hypocritical attempt to rewrite history.  Most people in Europe now see Sinn Fein for what it is – a mouthpiece for terror.  not only is it regarded as part of the organisation responsible for a litany of vile atrocities over thirty years, it is also seen as the pioneer of modern terrorism, exporting its cutting edge evil to friends in such sinister organisations as ETA and FARC.  I have every confidence that most MEPs will shun this outrageous event”.

Mr Allister and Mr Nicholson announced that they have prepared the attached leaflet for distribution to those attending the gathering so that no one will be in any doubt as to the real nature and legacy of Sinn Fein/IRA.
