Voters Chance to Have Their Say

04 January 2010

TUV leader Jim Allister has urged voters to come out in force to back the party’s candidate in the Lurgan by-election, David Calvert.

Mr Allister said:

“In the European election voters in the Lurgan area came out in force in support of Traditional Unionist Voice. The impact of those votes is still being felt today across the political spectrum. Commentators are united in their view that Traditional Unionist Voice has kept the brakes on the pace of concessions to Republicans. TUV is the Unionist community's best insurance policy. The stronger the TUV vote the slower the concession rate to McGuinness.

“TUV is clear. This by-election should not be taking place. It is nothing short of scandalous that Unionist Councillors opposed the co-option of a TUV member in Lurgan but sat on their hands last month when a Nationalist was being co-opted in Portadown. However, now that an election has been forced Traditional Unionists will contest it vigorously.

“Unionists can send a clear message to those in Stormont who are contemplating rolling over to Republicans on policing and justice and express their righteous anger at the cost of this totally unnecessary by-election by turning out in force and voting 1 Calvert.

I look forward to campaigning in the district this week and though the weather is inclement I trust on polling day Unionist voters will recognise the importance of speaking with strengthg at the polls. They can speak with the greatest strength and effect by voting Number 1 for David Calvert.

“As always, I would encourage TUV voters to transfer to the other pro-Union candidate”.
