Allister Attends Information Event on World Orange Heritage Centre
“This morning I attended an extremely informative event at Schomberg House dealing with the Orange’s plans to create a world Heritage centre.
“I was greatly impressed by the plans which were outlined and the enthusiasm of those involved. They clearly have a passion for our heritage and culture and a desire to share it with the wider community.
“I wish the Orange every success in creating what has the potential to become a world class heritage and cultural centre at Schomberg House and Sloan House.
The major issue now is securing the necessary funding. Rightly the Orange are looking for EU PEACE III funding
“For many years the Protestant and Unionist community has been the poor relation of Peace funding. This was an issue I consistently railed against during my time as an MEP. I would urge SEUPB to deal with the Orange’s application for funding swiftly and positively. This is an opportunity for the EU to go some way in redressing the imbalance between funding for the two communities in Northern Ireland.
“For many years money has been lavished on ex-prisoners’ groups while worthy community based organisations like the Orange Order have had to content themselves with crumbs or nothing at all. This is a golden opportunity for the SEUPB to gain some credibility with the Unionist community. I hope they will grasp it.”
