Building on Success?

01 December 2009

Responding to a poll published in today’s Belfast Telegraph Jim Allister said:

“Six months after Peter Robinson urged his party to go out and “spread the gospel of devolution” – omitting of course to say that it was the Gospel According to Martin McGuinness – the DUP have won over precious few converts.

“People have had two and a half years to assess how Stormont has delivered and the results for pro-agreement parties on both the Unionist and Nationalist side are less than encouraging.

“61% of all respondents – 69% of Protestants – said that devolved government has either made Northern Ireland a worse place to live or made no difference. Just 26% of Protestants believe that we are better off under devolution.

“Moving on to other results, 58% of Protestants rated to the performance of devolved government as either very poor or poor. Just 1% of Roman Catholics – and a big round zero percent of Protestants – believe that the performance of devolved government has been excellent.

“It is time all true democrats, both Unionists and Nationalists, woke up to the reality that  devolution is not delivering for any of the people of Northern Ireland living outside the Stormont bubble. The DUP might believe that they are “Building on Success” but it is evident that the public disagree.

“Belfast Agreement devolution has failed, has lost the confidence of the people and has to go!”
