Robinson Reneging On Election Pledge
26 October 2009
Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:
“Just prior to the European election Peter Robinson said:
“It is simply not possible to sustain and fully perform multiple roles whether they involve other elected positions or indeed interests outside Parliament…The workload is too great and there are not enough hours in the day to do multiple jobs”.
“When the DUP leader said that I imagine most people thought he meant the practice would end at the next Westminster election. It is now evident that this is not the case and that double-jobbing will remain a defining characteristic of the Democratic Unionist Party – in spite of their promises to the contrary for years to come.
“Of course, the people of Northern Ireland are well used to hearing the DUP say one thing and doing the opposite. One has only to think of how quickly the ill-gotten gains of Republicans became the soon forgotten gains or how the Army Council had to go before devolution could occur only for it to remain intact while discussions surrounding the devolution of policing and justice are at an advanced stage.
“It seems that the pledge to end double jobbing can be added to a long list of broken promises”.
