Questions for McCausland on Hunger Strike Event
18 August 2009
“In a scene reminiscent of the 1980s comedy Yes Minister Nelson McCausland has criticised the staging of a hunger strike commemoration at a GAA ground – but in his capacity as a DUP MLA. This raises the rather obvious question of what the Minister’s view of celebrations of terror at GAA grounds is.
“Is Mr McCausland precluded from speaking in that capacity on this issue?
“Wearing his DUP hat I would be interested to hear why Mr McCausland believes it is wrong for the GAA to accommodate a Hunger Striker event but it is perfectly acceptable for the DUP to accommodate Sinn Fein/IRA in government. Indeed, as well as criticising the GAA those who organised the commemoration, the Sinn Fein leadership, deserve to be lambasted. The event - and the involvement of Mr McCausland’s governmental partners in it – was highlighted by TUV vice-chairman Keith Harbinson a fortnight ago.
“Mr McCausland’s belated comments are welcome but it is high time that he faced up to the reality that the DUP is wrong to facilitate Sinn Fein/IRA in government – a party which, as these events illustrate, remains wedded to terrorism”.
