Guildhall IRA bash totally unacceptable
02 July 2009
Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:
“Plans to hold what is being billed as a “Derry Volunteers Commemoration Dance” in a building which was bombed on a number of occasions by the IRA are totally unacceptable. The minority community in Londonderry will rightly feel grossly affronted by this. How can they feel part of a city when an organisation which slaughtered their loved ones is permitted to use council property for such a function?
“It also raises serious questions for those Unionists who share power with Sinn Fein. If Republicans had truly undergone a Damascus Road experience post-St Andrews they would not be reveling in their bloody past in such a fashion. However, far from repenting in sack cloth and ashes Sinn Fein/IRA have once again demonstrated that they see nothing wrong in what Republicans did over a 30 year period. Indeed, a self-confessed IRA commander in Londonderry now occupies a position at the head of our government. This incident is just one of a host of examples which could be cited to show just how unfit he is to hold that position.
“The fact that Raymond McCartney – who is Deputy Chairperson of the Committee investigating policing and justice – could defend such an event should act as a stark warning to Unionists about the dangers of devolving further powers to an Assembly where Sinn Fein/IRA holds sway”.
