Stormont lurching into crisis, again - Allister

02 July 2009

As the Assembly limps to its summer recess, TUV Leader Jim Allister has asserted that the Executive is, like this time last year, mired in conflict and crisis, with no delivery of even efficient, never mind good government for Northern Ireland.

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister

"Though doubtless finding solace in the convenient and obliging endorsement by Gillan J of their dubious and non-transparent processes, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Stormont Executive is lurching towards another crisis. The dysfunctionalism which characterises OFMDFM, aided by Sinn Fein obstruction tactics - as it seeks to force the DUP to deliver on its cave-in on policing and justice - is producing the present fractious and mal-functioning Executive.

For months now Sinn Fein, again, has been sitting on papers in the deputy First Ministers office and often only agreeing such issues, as they do agree, minutes and hours before the Executive is due to meet. Little wonder one Minister has referred to the Executive as being run like a hucksters shop. I challenge OFMDFM to admit just how many papers are log-jammed and for how long.

It is clear that Sinn Fein is again flexing its muscles and having successfully used the tactic in 2008, to the point where the DUP meekly rolled over, they have every reason to believe their bully boy tactics will work again.

It is time the DUP faced and admitted the reality that government with IRA/Sinn Fein is unworkable and so far as it is kept together it is at the humilating price of tolerating and conceding to Sinn Fein's obstructive tactics. It is time the public was told the truth of the unworkability of this miserable Executive." back to list
