Allister welcomes Government promise to assist PMS savers

03 June 2009

TUV MEP Jim Allister has said he welcomes Shaun Woodward’s comments in relation to the Presbyterian Mutual Society, that he would ‘break the bureaucracy’ of devolution to assist the 9500 PMS savers.

The MEP said,
“For the past 7 months, PMS savers have experienced immense anxiety and hardship in the absence of firm Government commitment to safeguard savings deposited in the PMS. PMS savers were right to wonder at the different approach taken thus far vis-a-vis savers in this part of the United Kingdom, to the immediate assistance offered to savers with other institutions.”

“I have said all along, that DETI and HM Treasury have a responsibility towards PMS savers through the vacuum which existed through the lack of proper regulation of the PMS. Now that the Secretary of State has said Government will help PMS savers, I would urge Government to make good its promise that no UK citizen will lose any savings deposited in a UK financial institution. I trust a definitive statement on what assistance will be forthcoming will be made without any further delay”.
