Eve of Poll Statement by Jim Allister MEP

03 June 2009

"As the campaign draws to a close I am greatly heartened by the response across the country and believe our result will put heart back into unionists disillusioned by betrayal, scandal and hypocrisy.

We have seen much cynical propaganda, particularly by the vote-splitting DUP, about stopping Sinn Fein, when everyone knows it was they who gave us IRA/Sinn Fein to rule over us and that their real ambition is to see me, not de Brun, defeated. It is base hypocrisy for those who put IRA/Sinn Fein to the very top and heart of government to pretend such concern. You can't make Martin McGuinness your buddy in government and expect to be taken seriously about disingenuous alarm over de Brun. No, Unionists know I am the only candidate offering 24/7 opposition to Sinn Fein. It is the TUV 1st preference vote alone which will be counted as opposition to terrorists in government. Every other candidates votes will count as endorsement of McGuinness as Joint First Minister.

Unionists, therefore, should vote according to their conscience and vote first for the person they know is best able to do the job.

The accolade from the Taxpayers Alliance as the UK's best MEP is gratifying after 5 years hard work in Europe for Northern Ireland. My slogan of "Experience, Principle, Integrity" resonates with the needs of the moment."
