Allister Encouraged by Response

25 May 2009

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister QC MEP:-

"As we enter the last full week of the Euro Election campaign I am greatly encouraged by the response and believe I am well on the way to confounding the pundits.

“It is clear to me that the DUP vote is on the slide. Their sole policy, being without European policies or interest, of "stop Sinn Fein" has been rendered so threadbare by their contradictory actions that it is not washing with the voters. People see the hypocrisy and emptiness of the DUP, the party which gifted us IRA/Sinn Fein rule, in making McGuinness their buddy in government but pretending concern about Ms de Brun. You can't make Sinn Fein your closest partner in government and then pretend they are your enemy at the polls.

“Happily, opponents of Sinn Fein recognise that I am the only candidate opposed to IRA/Sinn Fein in government and that my opposition to them is 24/7. The DUP prop up Sinn Fein in government nine to five and then expect voters to believe them when canvassing at night. I'm not surprised their hypocritical message is being rejected.

"The speed with which the DUP performed its u-turn on triple jobbing is further confirmation that they know their support is nosediving. 2 months ago they were voting to sustain triple and double jobbing, now, in the face of public revolt, they are running for cover, hoping also to distract attention from £30,000 food bills and £160,000 mortgage interest payments out of the public purse.

“In face of such scandal it is gratifying that my principled stand at home and abroad is attracting me increasing support."
