Keeping the British Pound - We Must Not Go Down the Euro Route

22 May 2009

MEP and QC Jim Allister today urged that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland must never embark on joining the Euro monetary system.

One of his key election manifesto messages was that there is no place in the UK for the Euro.

The Traditional Unionist Voice Party Leader said: “I vigorously oppose the UK joining the Euro. It would entail further irreversible loss of sovereignty and surrender of essential fiscal and monetary management powers to the EU, including giving up to the European Central Bank the right to set and change our interest rates.

“The next step in this monetary harmonisation would be demands for European taxation. This cannot be allowed,” said Mr Allister.
