Allister presents Agriculture Manifesto to UFU

22 May 2009

Jim Allister MEP has met with Ulster Farmers’ Union President Graham Furey, to present him with a copy of the new Traditional Unionist Voice Agricultural Manifesto.

The MEP commented,
“My work for farmers, in representing their interests at home and abroad is an extremely important part of my role as an MEP. Working alongside farming organisations, including the UFU is an important part of ensuring I am well briefed on the issues of relevance to Northern Ireland agriculture.”

“Anyone who has followed the farming press or my own website will know that I have endeavoured to provide effective representation on behalf of local farmers over the past 5 years. My manifesto sets out my priorities for agriculture for the next 5 years, and I trust my ‘no-nonsense’ approach will be refreshing to many.”

“I firmly believe we need to re-discover CAP principles to ensure the availability of safe local food is no longer taken for granted, and so farmers receive an adequate return which reflects their efforts. For over a decade now, local farmers have been working harder and complying with additional red tape, yet their incomes have simply stagnated. Central to this approach is the effective scrutiny of supermarkets, so that profits can flow much more fairly throughout the supply chain than is the case at present.”
