Allister set to launch Agriculture Manifesto at Balmoral

08 May 2009

Jim Allister MEP has announced that a TUV manifesto exclusively focused on agriculture is to be launched next week at Balmoral Show.

Speaking to Farming Life, the MEP commented,
“Farming and Europe are synonymous, with agriculture spend accounting for over 40% of the total EU budget. That is why my Party has taken the important step of producing a dedicated farming manifesto which addresses what we hope to achieve in the next European Parliament 2009-2014.”

“Anyone who has followed my work in Brussels and in Strasbourg over the past 5 years will know that I have championed the cause of Northern Ireland agriculture in my first term as MEP. In light of the importance of the European stage in setting the policy framework of agriculture, particularly through the Common Agricultural Policy, I have promised to continue to champion Northern Ireland’s farming interests, if elected.”

“Of course, my work as MEP is not only confined to Europe. Farmers need strong, effective representation -at home and abroad. I have counted it a pleasure to represent the interests of the red meat sector, with the lifting of the EU ban on British beef, and the removal of inferior Brazilian product from the shelves being among my high points. The intensive pig and poultry sectors have their own particular needs, which is why I intend to continue to press Government to commit in favour of the much needed Rose Energy scheme. The Dairy sector requires ongoing support at this difficult time, while ultimately EU funds will be required to assist with restructuring at processing level. Ongoing challenges from more rigorous environmental constraints are well known, which is why it is my priority to ensure non-EU imports meet the high standards imposed on local producers.”

“I invite anyone to come to my stand at Balmoral located at C15 and C16, just through the main entrance in the King’s Hall. Come and get a free copy of my manifesto, or simply have a chat about the issues affecting your farm business.”
