Allister concerned at timing of harbour repairs

01 May 2009

First published: 29/04/09

Jim Allister QC MEP has said he shares fishermen’s concerns that repair works regarding the displaced storm gate at Annalong Harbour are to be carried out at a time of peak usage for the harbour.

The MEP said,
“While Newry and Mourne Council should not be dissuaded from repairing the storm gate at the harbour, one does question the logic of carrying out repairs at a time when we are entering the busiest period of use of the harbour by fishermen, bearing in mind the enormous disruption this would cause. Instead, the operation to remove the displaced Storm gate should have been carried out at a time when the Harbour was inactive. Furthermore, questions should be asked of the Council for its failure to adequately maintain the harbour in recent years, which is of great importance for many within the local Annalong community.”
