Armed Forces Day: "We will remember them" - Jim Allister

28 April 2009

ULSTER MEP and QC Jim Allister today (Tues 28 April welcomed an MOD announcement that councils across the United Kingdom are to be asked  to organise a series of events celebrating Armed Forces Day in June.

Mr Allister, Leader of the Traditional Unionist Voice party, said: "Just like the rest of the UK it is right and fitting that everyone who wants to can attend such events to honour our brave members of the Armed Forces.

"Every day those who serve in Iraq or Afhganistan put themselves in harms way serving their country to deal with terrorism that has ravaged the countries.

"Those who have died have paid the price but will never be forgotten across the many communities that they all came from throughout the UK".

He said: "The Prime Minister's call for people to commemorate our Armed Forces by attending special events must include Northern Ireland to the full - with no concessions to party of government Sinn Fein".

Mr Allister said the special day of June 27 and events beforehand would be occasions to honour the memory of those who had died, and an opportunity to commemorate the bravery of the men and women who had fought against the evils of international terror.

"I welcome the week that is being planned and pay tribute to the Forces.

"I hope all our local councils and the Northern Ireland Executive will fully participate, and I call for official endorsement from the Office of the First and deputy First Ministers.  There must be no predictable republican carping".
