"Important week in Strasbourg" says Allister

10 January 2005

Speaking today in Strasbourg, DUP MEP Jim Allister said, “This will be a significant week in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

On Tuesday we have the Parliament’s set-piece debate on the proposed EU Constitution, with the vote on Wednesday.  I will participate in this debate and once more marshal the arguments against the Constitution, which is the embodiment of centralisation of further power to Brussels and away from the nation states.  In the Constitutional Affairs Committee I have played a leading part in formulating the minority report, which vigorously defends national sovereignty and provides an alternative route for the Europe of the future, built on co-operation, not absorption.

No doubt given the blind enthusiasm of most MEPs for “Brusselisation” the Constitution will command a substantial majority in the Parliament, but I am hopeful that over 100 members, and hopefully a majority from the UK, will oppose it.  The real battle, namely that in the national referenda, will then begin.

Also on Tuesday, the Parliament will vote on the extension of PEACE II.  Whereas I will support this measure, I make it clear that unless the imbalance in fund distribution, which disadvantages the Protestant community, is tackled effectively, then I see no future for this PEACE funding beyond 2006. On Wednesday, the Parliament will hold an emergency debate on the Tsunami disaster.  This will be an opportunity to focus on the EU response, about which I have been critical, believing that the dire needs of the people of Asia affords better outlet for EU aid than much of the wasting of resources so infamously associated with Brussels.”
