Allister meets with RSPB at Belfast Harbour Reserve
20 March 2009
TUV MEP Jim Allister has met with RSPB’s Northern Ireland Conservation Manager, Dr James Robinson at its Belfast Lough Reserve today. The meeting was in response to an invitation from the Society to meet to discuss issues which are likely to feature under the next European Parliamentary term 2009-2014.
The MEP commented,
“I was pleased to be afforded the opportunity of visiting the RSPB’s facilities at Belfast Harbour, where a natural lagoon environment has been created for birds to flock to, while offering excellent viewing facilities for members of the public to enjoy.”
“Issues around the Common Agricultural Policy were discussed, in particular RSPB’s desire to see the continuation of agri-environment schemes which contribute significantly to the wellbeing of the local bird population. The support received from local farmers towards a number of recent RSPB initiatives, such as the introduction of 27 red kites to Northern Ireland last year is acknowledged by the RSPB. I expressed my own firm belief that a profitable farming base is an essential component to enabling more environmentally farming outcomes to be delivered.”
