"I am your insurance policy" - Allister tells Unionists
07 March 2009
At the end of a week which saw further moves to advance the transfer of policing and justice to an Assembly and Executive where IRA/Sinn Fein hold sway, TUV Leader Jim Allister MEP has warned that the outcome of the European election will determine the speed of further concessions to Sinn Fein.
Speaking to a public meeting in Castlederg the Traditional Unionist Leader said:-
“The constant whine from Sinn Fein that the DUP has to keep looking over its shoulder at TUV is a reminder of the vital role which we have been able to perform in applying the brakes to even faster implementation of the all-Ireland process of Belfast Agreement devolution. Dromore was the classic catalyst, when in consequence we saw a radical, panic-driven change of personnel at the top of the DUP, abandonment of the Maze Stadium and now the jettisoning of several intended judicial powers for OFMDFM. If this is what 800 votes can achieve, think what tens of thousands of traditional unionist votes will do. We will shake this iniquitous regime to its very foundations.
Every sensible person insures against risk, be it car, home or life. Likewise every thinking Unionist will want to insure against more runaway concessions to IRA/Sinn Fein. A first preference vote for either of the other Unionist candidates will bolster the regime, confirm acceptance of McGuinness as Joint First Minister, endorse 3 convicted terrorists as Ministers and signal acceptance of continuance of the Army Council. All of which will smooth the path to meeting whatever Sinn Fein’s next demands will be.
But a vote for TUV puts the brakes on. Remove TUV and its full steam ahead for the DUP/Sinn Fein coalition. Hence, the logic and sense of unionists insuring against such by voting in their tens of thousands for TUV. The 2007 Assembly election should be an object lesson for us all. Despite a manifesto that pledged the Army Council had to go, Sinn Fein had to deliver further, and much more, within days it was cosy-up time with IRA/Sinn Fein. The lesson is clear, vote TUV to keep Unionism strong.
I’m honoured to be the only candidate opposed to terrorists in government and to have a record of actions to match my words. Others might pretend opposition to Sinn Fein, but their actions belie their pretence. You can’t make Sinn Fein your primary partner in government and then pretend they are your enemy at the polls. No, sadly, that which unites DUP and Sinn Fein in this election is their shared desire to see this irritant and spoiler removed. Happily, the people, not the vested interest of the joint office of government, will decide.”
