Queues for farm modernisation grant reflective of DARD neglect

17 February 2009

MEP Jim Allister has said the spectacle of long queues of farmers camping overnight outside DARD offices, in order to submit farm modernisation applications, is appalling.

The MEP said,
“The steps farmers have been forced to take, just to be in with a chance of getting grant aid up to a maximum of £5000 is a shameful indictment on DARD. I have said repeatedly that the share of Rural Development funds allocated to Axis 1, and specifically for such purposes as Farm Modernisation are derisory, while the huge demand for funding is testament to that fact.”

“Farm Minister Michelle Gildernew presided over increased modulation deductions from farmers’ Single Farm Payments, which is costing the industry Millions of Pounds each year, while little is got back in return. Clearly, the industry is in dire need of investing in new technology which can enhance its competitiveness on the World market. I call on DARD to redistribute its priorities under Rural Development, to ensure farmers get a better deal out of the Rural Development Programme than they do at present.”
