Allister reports on Auschwitz visit

01 February 2009

Jim Allister with Auschwitz survivor, Naoh Kleiger

First published: 27th January 2009

Speaking after his visit to Auschwitz, to attend the European Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony, be part of a joint mission of Members of the European Parliament, EU National Parliaments and the Knesset, TUV Leader Jim Allister MEP said:-

“Anyone who has ever visited Auschwitz and stood in the gas chambers where millions of Jews were murdered and seen the awful conditions in which they were detained, could not fail to be moved and renewed in their determination to oppose Nazism and all such freedom-denying causes, be it terrorism or fascism.
I had the privilege of meeting Naoh Kleiger, an 83 year old French-born journalist who is one of the few remaing Holocaust survivors. To hear him recount the nigh unspeakable horror to which he and millions more were subjected was heart-rending. Little wonder the international conclusion, after the Holocaust, was that the Jews must have their own homeland. Thus the justice and necessity for Israel to exist, free from the modern day terrorism to which it is subjected.

I also had the opportunity to address The European Friends of Israel Group and draw parallels and lessons from Northern Ireland’s experiences of terrorism vis-à-vis that to which Israel is subjected.”
