Allister raises concerns over proposed residential home closures
02 December 2008
Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister has said a trend towards the ‘mass closure’ of Government owned residential homes across Northern Ireland is deeply worrying, and contrary to public need.
The MEP said
“Constituents from Dromore and Kilkeel have alerted me to the proposed closure of Skeagh House and Slieve Roe House by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. Furthermore, the Western Trust are proposing the closure of Drumhaw Residential Home in Lisnaskea, on similar grounds to the Southern Trust, that there will be less demand for statutory residential homes in the future because older people prefer to continue to live in their own homes. This ‘logic’ is absolute nonsense as far as I am concerned.”
“All three residential homes provide vital services to their local communities. Indeed, the extent of opposition to the Trusts’ proposals is testament of the desire among residents and their families to keeping open these homes. Furthermore, it would appear that the Trusts have not even bothered to consult the residents or their families about their needs and wishes in advance of proposing the closure of these homes. Indeed, the Boards have yet to reveal any firm proposals for enhanced community provision for the elderly in the event of these homes being closed, which most clearly betrays their rhetoric.”
“The manner in which these proposals have come about convinces me that ‘efficiency savings’ are the real motivating factor, not what is best for the elderly. Therefore, I have written to both Trusts, and to the Health Minister expressing my complete opposition to these callous plans, which have resulted in needless anxiety for those affected.”
