Allister welcomes 5% heifer compensation announcement

Jim Allister MEP has welcomed an announcement by DARD not to proceed with its appeal against the 5% heifer ruling, and instead to make a compensation payment to affected farmers.
The MEP commented,
“At last, it seems commonsense will prevail, and instead of the taxpayer having to fund another costly legal challenge, that money will be diverted into compensation payments to farmers.”
“We must be clear, this is not some goodwill payment on the part of the Department, but a long overdue recompense for income foregone on the part of farmers who suffered due to unclear advice from DARD. I trust payments will be made without any further delay.”
