Ban tricolour-trailing demo – Allister

17 October 2008

Traditional Unionist Jim Allister has slammed Sinn Fein/IRA for organising what he dubbed a “tricolour-trailing” counter demonstration to coincide with a parade to welcome our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan . The MEP said:

“That Sinn Fein/IRA is organising a demonstration on the same day as the parade to welcome home our brave troops from Iraq should not come as a surprise. Being familiar with the methods of the terrorist they understandably feel more affinity with the insurgents than those attempting to bring peace and democracy to the Middle East.

“Republicans claim that the parade is offensive to them yet, as with many other marches, they plan to travel to the city centre in order to be offended. What hypocrisy!

“All right thinking people will be disgusted by this tricolour-trailing exercise. It is a blatant attempt to manufacture tension. There should be no question of the Parades Commission allowing the march to go ahead. Accordingly, I have written asking them to ban the Republican demo from getting anywhere near the parade to welcome home our troops.”
