Allister raises concerns over 'reasonable' costs

16 October 2008

Jim Allister MEP has asked DARD to review how it determines ‘reasonable costs’, in relation to eligible items of expenditure under the Farm Nutrient Management Scheme.

The MEP commented,
“I have been contacted by a number of farmers who are concerned DARD’s determination of reasonable costs does not reflect the reality of actual construction costs. I am aware of examples where independent quantity surveyors have found fairly hefty shortfalls in DARD’s assessment of ‘reasonable’ costs, and the actual cost required to have the works completed.”

“Reduced eligible expenditure has obvious financial implications for farmers, and is causing delays in applicants being paid. I have written to DARD, asking that they review this situation to ensure that ‘reasonable’ costs equate with actual costs.”
