Farm scale under-investment must be addressed
09 October 2008
Ulster MEP Jim Allister has written to the European Agriculture Commissioner, making the case for additional funding which would enhance the competitiveness of the local agricultural industry.
The MEP said,
“Northern Ireland farms have suffered from gross under-investment in the past decade. Since the outbreak of BSE and the subsequent beef ban, and the domination of the local retail sector by the large multiple supermarkets, the ability of our farmers to invest in adequate machinery and housing has significantly reduced.”
“As with any business, investment is key to profitability. EU environmental legislation has caused many farms to invest in slurry storage which is essential, but will not do anything for the bottom line of those businesses.”
“In her recent EU Taskforce report, Commissioner Hubner acknowledged that the level of Rural Development support to assist the competitiveness of the local beef and dairy sectors is insufficient. Meanwhile, farmers in other Member States, including in the Republic of Ireland can avail of substantive public funding for meaningful investment in housing, fencing and meal bins. Northern Ireland farmers are clearly disadvantaged in comparison.”
“Under-investment at farm level is a major problem affecting Northern Ireland agriculture, which is why I have brought it to Commissioner Fischer-Boel’s attention, particularly as the re-allocation of unspent CAP funds is considered.”
