Executive neglect spreads to Brussels

30 September 2008

Statement by Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister:-

“The neglect and paralysis of the Executive has spread to Brussels. Every year in the second week in October Northern Ireland participates in “Open Days” organised by the regions of Europe. This is an opportunity to showcase projects and issues. Habitually a Minister from each region attends. This year both Welsh and Scottish Environment Ministers will be there to promote their regions and speak on selected topics, but not a single Northern Ireland Executive Minister is scheduled to attend. Instead we are to be represented by civil servants. Why?

Belfast City Council will have more representation at these events than the Stormont Executive. It is my understanding that both the DOE Minister, Sammy Wilson, and the DETI Minister, Arlene Foster, were invited to attend, but both declined.

Since coming to office this Executive has grossly neglected Europe. Engagement has been sporadic and shallow.”
