Allister opposed to new Commission

18 November 2004

DUP MEP Jim Allister QC, will today vote against the new EU Commission.

Speaking from Strasbourg, Mr Allister said, "My fundamental objection to the Commission remains - it sets up in government over us unelected placemen, many of whom are dubious, to say the least, in their background and probity.

I will not endorse by my vote such an undemocratic arrangement, nor approve the inclusion of former neo Stalinists in key positions, nor aid the passage of a  Commission which is committed to foisting the European Constitution upon the nation states and whose expenditure and actions are not subject to effective fiscal or democratic control.

I neither believe in a European Superstate nor government by superquango".
