Allister visits West Tyrone

18 May 2004

During a campaign tour in West Tyrone today, DUP European election candidate, Jim Allister QC, opened a new constituency office in Omagh for local Assembly Member, Thomas Buchanan.

Speaking at the event, Mr Allister said, “This office, like the many others throughout the Province, epitomises one of the key reasons for the DUP’s success, namely diligent constituency work.  People have discovered that they can not only trust the DUP on the big political issues, but equally that they will work for them on the day to day issues that matter to them most.  A party with a social conscience and unswerving commitment to holding the line against Sinn Fein/IRA is an unbeatable combination. The contrast in Unionism could not be more stark between the UUP – the party of yesterday – that is republican compliant and constituent indifferent and the DUP who put the people first and stand up for democracy and the rule of law.

In this town of Omagh, Sinn Fein has spectacularly let its people down on two major issues.  They have aided the Omagh bombers by refusing to urge co-operation with the police in bringing them to justice and their candidate, when Health Minister, helped rob Omagh of its hospital.  The West Tyrone electorate now have an opportunity to pass judgement on Sinn Fein’s antics.  Their candidate was a lamentable and partisan failure as Health Minister.  She would equally fail Northern Ireland in Europe, peddling her narrow ideology and demanding the waste of millions of euros in producing EU documentation in Irish.  West Tyrone and Northern Ireland has far greater priorities and needs.”
