Allister urges UK to stand strong against loss of Sovereignty

18 May 2004

DUP European election candidate, Jim Allister QC, has today urged the United Kingdom government to strand strong against any further loss of decision making powers to Brussels.

Jim Allister said, “As EU Foreign Ministers meet to try and narrow the gap on outstanding differences on the scope of EU decision-making powers under the proposed Constitution, I call upon the UK to stand firm on the following important issues:-

           EU judicial integration

Standards on detention and anti-terrorist legislation

           Tax fraud powers.

The hardcore Europhiles are pressing hard for concessions from the UK on all these fronts.  These are issues, however, on which the UK should not concede power to Brussels. It is vital that we retain our judicial independence, our rights to unilaterally set the anti-terrorist legislation necessary for the UK and control of criminal jurisdiction in matters of fraud.

Too much has already been conceded by the UK in the constitutional negotiations.  Its time it stood robustly against any further haemorrhaging of decision-making powers to Brussels.”
