Allister raises concerns over Brucellosis pilot

01 August 2008

Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister has raised concerns over the reported introduction of a Brucellosis ‘Pilot Scheme’ exclusive to South Armagh. Under Michelle Gildernew’s initiative, where a herd shows any sign of brucellosis contamination, DARD will buy-out the entire herd.

The MEP said,
“It was brought to my attention in recent weeks that herds in South Armagh are being compensated in full where a first instance of brucellosis is detected. This initiative, introduced by the Sinn Fein Minister is highly susceptible to fraud. However, I note the pilot has received a warm welcome from Gildernew’s Party colleague, Cllr Hearty at a Newry and Mourne Council meeting.”

“I recently corresponded with DARD’s Permanent Secretary, asking him to provide additional information about this ‘pilot initiative’. Firstly, did a public consultation precede its introduction? Did this initiative command full endorsement of DARD’s veterinary officials? How long is this elusive ‘pilot’ set to run for, and finally, what additional financial provision will have to come from the DARD budget to pay for this?”

“I am amazed by DARD’s response, which sidesteps completely from any sort of rationale or explanation for the introduction of this ‘pilot’ in South Armagh. The location chosen is telling in itself, for what I suspect is another politically motivated decision.”
