Allister urges Blair not to endorse EU Constitution

17 June 2004

ALLISTER URGES BLAIR NOT TO

ENDORSE EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION

Democratic Unionist MEP, Jim Allister QC, has written to Prime Minister Tony Blair and urged him not to endorse the proposed European Constitution at the upcoming EU summit, saying that any such Constitution would be adverse to the interests and independence of the UK and is not supported by the British electorate, as evidenced by the recent European Parliamentary election result.

The full letter reads:

“Dear Prime Minister,

I write to urge you not to endorse the proposed European Constitution at this weekend’s summit.

The further haemorrhaging of national power which is involved, along with the establishment of structures compatible only with the evolution of a European Superstate, causes support for the Constitution to be adverse to the interests and independence of the United Kingdom.

Moreover, following last week’s EP elections you do not have the mandate necessary for such a change in our relationship with the EU. Compatible with the underlying message of the GB results, the results from Northern Ireland very strongly demonstrate majority and cross-community opposition in this part of the Kingdom to the proposed Constitution.

I, therefore, urge you to withhold the UK’s endorsement of the proposed Constitution, with or without your so called ‘red lines’.

Yours sincerely,

JAMES H ALLISTER QC MEP”
