Allister calls for clarity on tap tax and Orange Halls

19 May 2008

Traditional Unionist Jim Allister has written to the Departments of Social and Regional Development calling for clarity on the issue of Orange Halls and water rates. Commenting the MEP said:

“Orange and other community halls have rightly been granted exemption from council rates but there is confusion as to whether a similar exemption will apply when water charges kick in.

“I have written to the DRD Permanent Secretary requesting clarification in relation to this important matter and have asked DSD Minister Margret Richie to make representations to Regional Development stressing the importance of Orange halls to the social well being of an area.

“Orange halls were the first community halls and continue to fulfill this role. It is also important to remember that halls use a fairly minimal amount of water. It is therefore essential that Orange Halls are exempt from the tap tax.”
